Preview Reviews: April: Marvel time

by

God, I sucked it up trying to do DC just now. I should really just stop. But what if Chuck Austen had stopped? Then he wouldn’t have had some villain rape a girl in Superman. Or turn Northstar into a steriotype and Angel into a pedophile during Uncanny X-Men. Or earn the ire of millions of fans. Or become unemployed ever since both companies fired him. That sounds like mor evidence I shoukd quit, no? Well, consider this: Apple just came out with a “revolutionary” new computer, the iPad. Two years from now, Chuck Austen will help design its high-speed upgrade, the MAXI-PAD.

lmao, i should really go out on that joke. But whatever, I’m going to do Marvel Preview Reviews from April (2010) really quickly.

The Marvel blockbuster of the year!!
This double-sized finale brings the Dark Reign
to a shattering conclusion and brings with it
the bombastic new HEROIC AGE. Every single page of this book is a shocker: Lives are
changed. Heroes fall. Deaths. Revenge. Villain comeuppance. And when the dust settles, who will be in charge of the Marvel Universe??
You will find out here and only here. This is
the one they will be talking about.
40 PGS./Cardstock Cover/Rated T+ …$3.99

david: Apparently, this is a big deal. What will happen in Siege’s finale? Well, I’ll tell you: Iron Man and Steve Rogers come to the rescue, providing the final push as Thor ends the Siege of Asgard. Then Spider-Man kills Norman Obsorn, an act which haunts him for at least the rest of 2010. sentry dies too, probably by Thor and/or Osborn and/or his own hand. Maybe Ms. marvel and Moonstone will make out, too.

SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!!
Series Finale!! What?! Marvel’s number one ongoing series is coming to an end?! What could possibly happen in the last chapter of SIEGE that is so intense as to bring this crazy chapter in Marvel history to a close??!! Well, clearly we can’t tell you here but there will be a funeral and the fate of Norman Osborn Will. Be. Decided!!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Dave: Surely siege ends with Osborn’s death? I can’t imagine another way for it to go down. If not, the funeral is for Sentry, adn Osborn goes to prison or is killed by his own Dark Avengers. Should I stop predicting months in advance? Perbe. But bendis isn’t hard to figure out, so I could probably guess it all, sober-er.

32 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

David: Omg! An issue of New Avngers that involves the Hood?! How that be???!!!!! That was sarcasm; every issue involveds the Hood. Spiffy convicede me to read the Hood miniseries, back in the MAX days,. It sucked. Spiffy led me astray, asshole. back to this issue: Is Mockingbird going to die? Becuase that would be really shitty ro bring her back just to kill her off again. Hawkeye ruls.

SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!!
SALVATION Pt. 2 of 2
“WWJVDD”
SERIES FINALE! While the Mighty Avengers are fighting on the front lines of SIEGE, can HANK PYM and JOCASTA stop the Avenger’s greatest enemy, ULTRON, by themselves? Or will Pym-Space become the ultimate staging ground for a cybernetic-assault on all of reality? See SIEGE through the eyes of the Avengers with the most to lose! The Dark Reign is ending, the Age of Heroes is coming, but before that can happen…there’s a wedding? And more than one character is thinking, “What would Janet Van Dyne do?” We can’t be any more cryptic than that. Trust us, you don’t want to miss this one.
32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

FDavid: Is Janet going to come back? God I hope so: her death at the end of Secret Invasion was wone ofg the shittiest, most pointless deaths ever. Both more likely, Hank Pym is going to marry Jocasta, or some creepy shit like that. I wonder what will become of Slott’s Avengers after April, when the title concludes.

David: This next section features Marvel’s new slogan: We’re not sexist. No really, we’re not. Seriously, we’ll prove it: look how many women-related comic books we’re putting out by creators you’ve never heard of. See? We can’t possibly be sexist if we have all these mediocre attempts at superheroine comic books. We’ll take your rolling of your eyes to mean that you believe us.

Kind of a lengthy slogan, but don’t blame me; Marvel came up with it.

The deadly super-spy from IRON MAN 2, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN and CAPTAIN AMERICA in her own ongoing series!
Natasha Romanoff is not a super hero. She’s not psychic. She doesn’t fly. And yet as the Black Widow, she manages to hold her own against a world of incredibly powerful enemies…and allies. But now someone has tried to kill Natasha…and almost succeeded. Injured gravely, almost beyond her ability to recover, Black Widow sets out to find her attacker…with no suspects and no leads. Who could be deadly enough to get the drop on Natasha? And what connections do they have to some of her closest super hero friends…? Plus, a backup detailing the deadly history of the Black Widow!
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

David says: I actually really like Black Widow. She was awesome on the Avngers back in the day, and has become really good in Ed Brubaker’s Captain America. I hope she can sustain her own title well, but I kind of doubt it.

Already one of the most talked about comics of the year, Marvel is proud to present the second issue of GIRL COMICS, spotlighting some of the most talented women working in comics today! With something for every comic reader, from the Fantastic Four to the X-Men to the reunion of acclaimed creators LOUISE SIMONSON and JUNE BRIGMAN on the Power Pack, you won’t want to miss this Marvel milestone!
48 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

Dave sayss; Well, at elast I’ve heard of Louise Simonson, and I assume Kathryn is related to Stuart Immonen (lesbian lover’s niece?). Otherwise, this looks like a lame, desperate attempt at reachi ng a largely indifferent female audience. Will Lia buy this>? No, because it has neither Freedom Force nor Rogues members. And Lia (presumably) has a vagina, making her a female (so she claims). Hence, proof that females don’t necessarily flock to “girl comics” — they like good characters who are well-developed, just like men.

MARVEL HER-OES #1
Written by GRACE RANDOLPH
Pencils & Cover by CRAIG ROUSSEAU
High school equals: bad cafeteria food, bullies, gym class and…people with secret super powers? As if!! Janet Van Dyne’s no stranger to the pitfalls of teenage living, but it’s about to get a whole lot trickier now that she has powers of her own. It’s hard keeping a secret like that in high school, especially when it would be so easy to send some blasts in the direction of her nemesis and popular ice queen, Namora. Maybe Janet would get a break then. Too bad she’s stuck pretending she’s normal. Too bad she’s in this all alone… or is she? Jenny Walters has some anger issues herself, causing her to Hulk out! Turns out the school theatre isn’t the only place you’ll find some drama this year!!
32 PGS/Rated A…$2.99

David: Wortstest title ever for a comic book?Yes, yes it is..

32 PGS./One-Shot/Rated T+ …$3.99

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHO WON’T WIELD THE SHIELD?
Written by CLASSIFIED
Pencils and & Cover by CLASSIFIED
Steve Rogers has returned! In fact he was in such a hurry that he actually came back before the story was done! But, whatever, I’m sure no one even noticed. Anyway, Bucky Barnes is the current Captain America, and has come into his own in the role in a story Captain America editor Tom Brevoort calls “the greatest single marriage of words and pictures in the history of the English language. Suck it, rest of literature!” But will Bucky go back to being the Winter Soldier? Are there others in line? Who cares?! All we’re interested in is who WON’T be holding that Vibranium laced hunk of junk and what major new Marvel event comic it leads into. Who won’t wield the shield? It could be not YOU!!! (Featuring a special appearance by everybody’s favorite underused character, Deadpool! At last, Deadpool! In a comic!)

Davey, Davey Crockett, king of the wild frontier: I’m growing tired of deapool becoming the new Wolverine (ie, being everywher), but this has even me interested. Liefield returning to the character he created, and some funny additions. It’s worth considering. But I won’t mention any of Deadpool’s other books this month, or we’d be here until 2011.

David says to you: Another attempt at “look at us, we’re doing a female superheo comic!” The idea of giving women a bigger place in comics is laudable, but forcing it with bad charactes and mediocre creators isn’t the way to go about hings. Just give a strong female lead a storng writing/art duo, for once.

Hence, proof that females don’t necessarily flock to “girl comics” — they like good characters who are well-developed, just like men.

This. While I am glad to see female creators getting a chance, that doesn’t mean it’s automatically interesting to me. It really depends on how they handle the characters — I’ve never liked Louise Simonson’s writing, for instance, and it’s unlikely I’d ever read her future work.

I do enjoy the art of Colleen Coover and Jill Thompson, though.

I love how you point out that it’s April (2010)….Not last year or 2011, bwahaha.

You’re still an idiot for not liking The Hood.

And your predictions sound very likely, actually, even though I wouldn’t know.

Perhaps most impressive is your insight into Marvel’s retarded women comics here, which Lia’s response attests. Of course, the best joke in this is Marvel’s new slogan. I was ROFL’ing (not really).

Marvel Her-oes … I still can’t get over someone thinking that was a good idea of a title.

Anyway, this one didn’t turn out even half as funny as DC. I was clearly losing steam, and by the end, I really just wanted to finish because I was worried I might pass out before I could post (and in my drunken stupor, it seemed incredibly important that I post in that night). Also, DC just seemed to give much better set-ups, and I couldn’t really get on the same kind of roll with Marvel.

Having said that, I still love my maxi-pad joke in the intro. Marvel’s slogan was a good one, and I’m also a fan of “Color me intrigued (if you even possess such a crayon.”
