Joss Whedon to Direct Avengers?

While it’s not completely official, sounds like Marvel Studios are finalizing an agreement with fanboy/geek extraordinare Joss Whedon to direct Avengers, Marvel’s upcoming tentpole project. Having co-created Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse to varying degrees of awesome and fanfare (not to mention Dr. Horrible and an upcoming episode of Glee), directed Serenity and written Runaways and Astonishing X-Men, is Whedon the perfect choice?

Kidding; I’ll say more than that. Actually, no, he’s not quite the perfect choice. He’s never directed a big-budget blockbuster, and in fact, his directing credits are pretty scarce — several TV episodes, with Serenity his only film. So if some people are a little concerned about how he’ll handle the technical aspects of Marvel’s most ambitious movie yet, then I think that’s a fair criticism (though I think he’ll do great).

However, if that’s the “bad,” then it’s far outweighed by the good, at least to me. I was a huge Buffy fan early on, and liked Angel at times. And no one who’s ever seen Firefly and Serenity didn’t love them. His Astonishing X-Men run made my top runs of the decade. The bottom line is: Whedon understands story structure and well-developed characters as well as just about anyone you’ll find in the industry. And his comics experience suggests he’s probably already familiar with the Avengers to the extent that he has some stake as a fan in getting this done right. Hopefully, he has broad license to either help write or re-write, the way Warner Bros. gave Christopher Nolan.

I really think it’s a home-run move by Marvel & Co. I would have been excited about the movie regardless, but this reinforces my optimism. Marvel Studios seems to making all the right moves.

I’m not really capable of brevity.

    Any thoughts on Whedon, Spiff?

    He’s cool, dawg.

Nah, he’s about the perfect choice. He KNOWS these characters, is a nerd like us, and is certainly talented, and he did some wonderful things on Serenity with a teeny budget, so I’m not concerned with his ability to make a big ass blockbuster. I compare him to JJ Abrams in his pop culture/cool geek-gasm level of cool, and think Avengers would bring him into that stratosphere, since he’ll finally make money like Abrams consistently does (though he struggled with Felicity and Alias before hitting big with LOST, MI III, Star Trek, Cloverfield, etc. etc.).
